Over the years, many revisions of the same tape were made available, correcting bug in the software and updating some questions.īy 1994, Fukutake Shoten was in full transformation mode with the change to Benesse corporation in progress and the recent acquisition of Berlitz International, Inc. The SBX-01 function exactly the same ways as its predecessor, but in a much smaller form factor. It’s unclear when exactly the SBX-01 was released and if replacement devices were offered to the parents still renting the M-1000 model at the time. In order to be able to sell the Study Box, the initial cost had to be reduced, which led Fukutake Shoten to build a cheaper version of the Study Box, called the SBX-01. The renting model was partially a result of the high cost of the device which needs to be amortized over a few years to be affordable by parents. The model 1000, was a costly device and the renting scheme was not particularly appreciated by the parents who forced Fukutake Shoten to revise their model. As the device was rented, it needed to be returned when withdrawing from the membership. Each lesson (tape) cost ¥3,500 and were released once a month. The peripheral was only available for rental, with a rental fee of ¥15,000 for the first year and ¥10,000 yen for the second year. The device was only available to students registered to the Shinkenzemi Elementary School Course which was operated by Fukutake Shoten. In April 1986, the Audio Visual Education System was finally released under the name Study Box. The device would only output the left channel to the television. The Audio Visual Education System was designed to store the program on the right channel and the sound on the left channel. These magnetic tapes also had the ability to store audio, which made them perfect for a correspondence course. Magnetic tape where cheap to produce and where an already proven method to old data as many early computers used them for data storage, including the Famicom itself (to store programs made with the basic cartridge). As such, the usage of tape cassettes imposed itself as the way to go. The goal was to produce a device that could provide entertaining educational training the cheapest way possible. On July 20, 1984, seeing the huge potential of the Famicom, Fukutake Shoten and Nintendo entered into an agreement with regard to the development of the “Audio Visual Education System”. The Famicom quickly became widespread among the youth with 2.5 million units sold within the first eighteen months. With the release of the Nintendo Famicom in 1983, Japan was embarking in a new era of home electronics. From there the company was always looking for new ways to make the correspondence courses more interactive and the advent of videogames was the perfect solution. Although the company started with publishing educational materials and student pocketbooks for junior high school students, they quickly expanded to simulated exams for high school (1962) and then correspondence courses for senior high school students (1969). In was founded on Januby Tetsuhiko Fukutake, as a publisher of educational materials. Fukutake Shoten (later known as Benesse Corporation) is a Japanese company which focuses on correspondence education and publishing.
